It is not owned by a builder, a trade association, or a lead-generation network, and no builder or association writes or approves what appears here. What it takes to be listed
A profile is built by hand from public records and the builder's own published pages: the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) licence register, Housing First Minnesota's member and Top 25 lists, Parade of Homes and Remodelers Showcase rosters, NARI membership, and the builder's own website. A claim we could not find on those pages is left out rather than repeated. Submitting our listing form does not create a profile; it creates a request we review.
We publish a builder's Minnesota residential building contractor licence (a BC number) only after checking it against DLI's public register, and every profile prints the date of that check. A profile with no confirmed licence carries no badge and says that verification is in progress. As of 2026-09-08, 141 of 145 listed builders show an active, DLI-checked licence, and 142 of 145 link to the builder's own website.
A builder is put on hold when the DLI register shows an enforcement action on the licence, when DLI no longer shows the licence as issued, when we cannot confirm a licence for the operating entity, or when the builder's own website does not resolve. A held builder stays listed, but is never featured and never sent a matched request until the record is resolved. That rule is in the matching code, not only in a policy: it applies to the automated shortlist and to a request that names the builder directly. 15 builders are on hold as of 2026-09-08.
14 production and national builders are listed so the directory is complete. They sit below local firms on every listing page, are never featured, and never receive a matched request.
How the site makes money
Listing is free and cannot be bought. No builder can pay to be listed, to edit their description, or to change the organic order of a directory page. Two things are for sale, and both are disclosed in full on how we vet and rank builders:
- Featured placement — $99 a month, one builder per city, always labelled "Featured". It puts a builder at the top of their city pages and adds weight to their score in the matching service; it never adds a builder who does not serve your city and project type. As of 2026-09-08, 0 of 23 city slots are held.
- Matched projects — when a homeowner asks to be matched, the request goes to up to three eligible builders who serve that city and project type, and we intend to be paid by builders for those projects. As of 2026-09-08 that is an intention rather than an income: requests are forwarded by hand, and no builder has been billed for a matched project.
What we do not do: no unlabelled paid placement, no sponsored position in the organic order, and no selling of your details to anyone other than the builders you were matched with (see the privacy policy).

The cost and code guides cite primary sources — Minnesota statutes and rules on revisor.mn.gov, city ordinances and fee schedules — and link to them so you can read the text rather than take our word. Not every figure in the older guides has its citation beside it yet; we close those gaps as we find them.
