Wayzata sits at the top of the Minnesota luxury market. Perched on the north shore of Lake Minnetonka — locals call it the gateway to the lake — it combines a walkable lakefront downtown with some of the most valuable residential land in the state. Ferndale and the shoreline estates west of downtown are among the metro's trophy addresses.
New construction here is estate-grade custom work: lakefront homes on scarce shoreline lots, teardown-rebuilds in Wayzata Heights, and large customs on the wooded parcels that ring the lake. Shoreland zoning adds a real layer of complexity — impervious-surface limits, bluff and setback rules, and DNR shoreland standards shape what can be built and where — so lake-experienced builders earn their keep.
The builders serving Wayzata are the region's premium tier, many with decades of Lake Minnetonka work behind them. Projects are fewer and larger than anywhere else in the metro, and the right builder match matters more here than in any volume market.
The lifestyle is a large part of what clients are buying: lakeside dining at spots like 6Smith and CoV, Wayzata Beach a short walk from the shops downtown, and the Dakota Rail Regional Trail running along the shoreline for biking in summer and cross-country routes in winter.
Premier lakefront properties close to the heart of downtown — luxury, convenience, and open-water views.
An exclusive enclave of waterfront estates a short distance from downtown Wayzata's amenities.
Historic charm and modern luxury in a wooded, lakeside setting across the bay.
Victorian architecture and a vibrant lakefront main street — old-world charm on the lake's south shore.

Yes. Minnesota requires residential building contractors to hold a state license (BC number) issued by the Department of Labor & Industry, and Wayzata (Hennepin County) also requires local permits and inspections for new construction and major remodels. We display verified license numbers on builder profiles as we confirm them. Always verify a contractor's license status at the DLI website before signing.
Looking wider than one city? Home builders in Hennepin County covers the whole county — every city and township, where the buildable land is, and how the zoning rules differ between them.
